Moving on Event

Thursday 18th September 2014

Anyone with an interest in services and opportunities for people with disabilities is invited to attend an informal event to find out about what’s available in the borough and meet the people providing the service on Thursday 18th September, from 1:00pm – 5:30pm at the Robin Park Sports Centre, Wigan.

More than 50 groups and organisations which offer a variety of social care support and specialist services for people with a range of disabilities will have information stands at the event, ‘Moving on - through transition and beyond’. This is being organised by Wigan Council, local Mencap, Embrace, and leisure provider WLCT. Volunteer ‘Moving On ambassadors’ from SKILS CIC, TrueColurs CIC and Just BU CIC will also be involved in helping to run the event.

Representatives from the organisations will be available to talk about what they offer and explain how people can access and benefit from their services. Wigan Council’s Transition social workers and brokers will also be at the event along with a number of charities, all offering a variety of support services, advice, training opportunities and advocacy for people with a disability, their family and carers. Visitors will also have the chance to speak to people who currently use some of the services to find out more.

The event will be of particular benefit to young people with disabilities who are making the transition from children’s services into adult services, their families and carers, who will be able to find out more about the opportunities available to them.

Wigan Council director of adult social care and health, Stuart Cowley, said: “We are delighted to be working with MENCAP, WLCT, Embrace Wigan and Leigh and local groups in planning and running this event. The level of interest shown by existing and new providers of social care services has been tremendous.

“The event is a great opportunity for people who are currently using services to find out what else is available to them. It’s also a chance for anyone wanting to access services for the first time to get information on how to go about it and get help if they need it.

“The volume and diversity of providers at this event shows how opportunities for people with disabilities are increasing, and changing to reflect what people want and need. More people are being supported to take part in and enjoy activities in the community, increasing their independence and learning new skills.”

Chair of Lowton, Golborne and Ashton MENCAP, Bob Short, added: “Many of our members, their families and friends along with people in the wider community have seen a change in social care over the last few years. This event is an opportunity to meet new Community Interest Companies (CIC’s) and smaller providers who are now providing a range of services. It is an extension of the annual “transition” event but now also includes information on new opportunities and services for adults. The day is aimed at making people aware of what is now available in and around the Wigan Borough and how to access it.”

The event will be officially opened at 1.30pm, followed by accessible sports and leisure activities and taster sessions throughout the afternoon. It takes place on Thursday 18th September between 1.00pm and 5.30pm at the Robin Park Sports Centre, opposite the DW Stadium, Wigan, WN5 0UH.

The Sports Centre is an accessible building with ample free parking, and all activities will be on the ground floor.
